The bond has been set at $1,000,000 for 21-year-old Dylann Storm Roof, the young man who killed nine African-Americans during a prayer meeting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C.

During the sorrow-filled and emotional bond hearing—the nine victims’ family members were in attendance—Chief Magistrate James Gosnell announced that Roof will face a bond of $1,000,000 for one weapons charge for a violent crime, but no additional bond for the nine murder charges and will not be released. His court dates will be scheduled for Oct. 23, 2015 at 2 p.m. and Feb 5, 2016 at 9 a.m. Additionally, he has been given the right to a preliminary hearing to review the evidence.

“Charleston has a very strong community,” Gosnell said. “We have big hearts, we’re a very loving community. And we’re going to reach out to everyone, all victims and we will touch them.”

During the hearing, an emotionless Roof appeared via video camera as families of the victims gave statements of forgiveness and them being strengthened by love, rather than hate.

“I forgive you! You took something very precious away from me. I will never be able to talk to her again, I will never be able to hold her again! But I forgive you…and have mercy on your soul,” said a daughter of the late Ethel Lance.

During the press conference, the governor and police chief declined to answer any questions until the investigation is compete.
